A note from the editor

If our story in this edition on senior softball reads with a frothy sense of enthusiasm, that’s only fitting.

Our new Staff Writer, Kyla Cathey, had a great time getting to know these silver-haired sluggers.

“They had such amazing life experiences — and a zest for life,” she said. “They had great stories and a sense of fun.”

Sally Snyde’s wonderful world

Sally Greenley Snyde is a sensational saleswoman. From her early days securing orders of slug and snail mix from Northern California nurseries to persuading Lodi donors to fund a new children’s electrical exhibit, she is a master at closing the deal.

But this farmgirl at heart is not focused on profit margins. Instead, her mission is to keep the World of Wonders Science Museum, the only hands-on children’s science museum in the Central Valley, open and operating at its highest potential.

On a recent Friday, Snyde was catching up on paperwork in the museum’s office. She is a full-time volunteer, working at least 40 hours a week without drawing a paycheck. Wearing a blue button-down top and black slippers embroidered with glittering beetles, she was quick to laugh out loud with a co-worker, then warmly hug an elderly volunteer who spent the morning organizing for the museum’s sixth birthday party. Snyde holds the WOW’s origins in her core, able to recite donor’s names half-a-decade after their contribution and remember exactly who said what at a board meeting in 2008.

Softball ... with a touch of silver

Two men run to catch a neon green softball arcing through the darkening blue sky as the batter steps back and swings the bat a few times. One backs off, and the other neatly catches the ball, throwing it back toward the pitcher.

10 ways to celebrate spring at the Cosumnes River Preserve

I was hoping to spot one. The Cosumnes River Preserve is one of my favorite places. It is close, lush and nearly erupts with wildlife. On a recent visit, the sun streaked brilliantly over the wetlands and riparian wildlands. It was early afternoon, and I was striding along on a trail next to a pond.
